GETTING IN ON SOUTHERN MICHIGAN’S EXCLUSIVE BED & BREAKFAST INNS

(Jones, Michigan)—The Bed and Breakfast Association of Southern Michigan is a cooperative organization of 24 Bed & Breakfast Inns located in the southernmost portion of Michigan’s lower peninsula. Here is a sneak peak to what’s inside each inn.

1. Albion Heritage Bed & Breakfast Inn—within comfortable walking distance from downtown Albion and NASCAR racing at the Michigan International Speedway is just 30 minutes away. Built in 1912, the Albion Inn is a Georgian revival home with rooms named after Albion’s historic figures.

2. Arrowhead Cove Bed & Breakfast Inn—the inn offers guests an eco-friendly approach to bed & breakfast lodging. This timber-frame, renewable-energy home on Portage Lake in Mendon, Michigan lets visitors enjoy wildlife viewing and water sports, or take a more calming approach and explore their Heritage Water Trail and organic gardens.

3. Bed of Roses Bed & Breakfast Inn—located on the Historic Sauk Trail, settled along a beautiful hillside overlooking Portage Lake in rural St. Joseph County, Michigan. Nearby leisure activities include golfing, nature trails, antique shopping, and the Michigan International Speedway is only a ½ mile away.

4. The Brickhouse of Somerset Bed & Breakfast Inn—gives visitors a look into the past with its beautiful Victorian architecture and craftsmanship. Built in 1888, the Brickhouse was one of the largest farms built along the Sauk Trail, and is conveniently located near more than 52 lakes, Jackson Community College, several Golf Courses, local orchards, and McCourtie Park. The Brick House is nestled between Allen "the Antique Capital of Michigan”, the beautiful Irish Hills “Antique Alley”, and is just 7 miles from Michigan International Speedway.

5. Castle In The Country Bed & Breakfast Inn—“miles away from the ordinary”, and built nearly a century ago, “The Castle”, as it has come to be called, is surrounded by 65 wooden acres, and features gardens, lawns, woodland area with walking trails, a screened gazebo overlooking the pond, and a screened porch/dock on a secluded private lake.

6. Chicago Pike Inn—voted "Inn of the Year" by guests and reader votes compiled by The Complete Guide To Bed & Breakfasts, Inns and Guesthouses In The United States & Canada by Pamela Lanier, is an old-world delight tucked away in the historic district of Coldwater, Michigan. Noted for its preserved sweeping cherry staircase, and Victorian-style furnishings, the Chicago Pike Inn is a delight for guests of all ages. Located nearby is Pokagon State Park, and annual events like the Battle Creek Air Show & Hot Air Balloon Championships, 4 Corners Art Festival, and Colon Magic Festival.

7. Chicago Street Inn— beautiful 1886 Victorian-style home built in the cozy, quaint town of Brooklyn, Michigan. This luxurious getaway inn offers six rooms, three Jacuzzi/fireplace suites, private baths in every room, refreshments throughout the evening, full breakfast in the morning, in an exceptionally clean environment. The inn was voted by inn-goers as “Best in Customer Service” in Arlington’s 2005 Book of Lists.

8. At Coppy’s Inn in Grass Lake, MI, guests are invited to “Slow down, and experience a time when life held more journey and less destination.” Coppys is within a 30-minute drive of the Michigan International Speedway, Purple Rose Theater, Cascades, Potter Center, the Jackson Space Center, Irish Hills, the Waterloo Farm Museum and the cities of Jackson & Ann Arbor. While staying at Coppys Inn Country Bed & Breakfast guests can enjoy exploring the back roads and farm markets, antiquing, shopping, cycling, hiking, playing golf, fishing, kite flying, playing croquet, or just lounging in their 60-acre backyard.

9. The DeLano Mansion Inn—Victorian elegance at its best. Built in 1863 by David Doane Davis, The DeLano Mansion Inn Bed and Breakfast is one of Allegan, Michigan’s grandest mansions. With over 5,600 square feet on three floors, the Inn is truly a Grand Dame of Victorian Italianate architecture. When taking a break from the scenic structural design, guests can enjoy nearby horseback riding, spa, kayak, massage, and shopping in Downtown.

10. Dewy Lake Manor Bed & Breakfast Inn—This century-old home sits atop a knoll overlooking picturesque Dewey Lake in the Irish Hills of Southern Michigan. The inn is furnished with antiques and original kerosene chandeliers, with six fireplaces and central A/C. Guests can enjoy paddleboats, canoe, picnics, and lakeside bonfires.

11. J. Paules Fenn Inn—established in 1986, has already been acclaimed by visitors from all over the world as providing old-fashioned relaxation and restoration. And its no wonder-having only five rooms in operation allows more personal, one-on-one interaction with guests, providing friendly and helpful accommodation. The location of this traditional European Bed & Breakfast is also easily accessible to year-round family-friendly activities such as golfing, biking, hiking, fishing, cross-country, and down-hill skiing.

12. The Kalamazoo House Bed & Breakfast—located squarely in downtown Kalamazoo, the inn is an excellent base of operations for all downtown events. Situated within three blocks of six modern downtown restaurants, eight or more downtown nightspots, the Kalamazoo Institute of Art, the Kalamazoo Public Library, Bell's Brewery, the State Theatre, the Kalamazoo Mall, Climb Kalamazoo, Bronson Methodist Hospital, and many more. Not to be overtaken by the events of nearby downtown, timeless decor brings a restive state of mind if your plans are for relaxation.

13. Kingsley House Bed & Breakfast Inn— ideally located just minutes from the resort towns of Saugatuck, Holland and South Haven. The splendor of Allegan State Forest and the sandy beaches of Lake Michigan are also close by, not to mention its surrounding fruit orchards and wine country. Kingsley House was recently voted “2005 Best Breakfast in the Midwest” by Arrington's Inn Traveler, and has been featured in publications such as Country Victorian Decorating Ideas, Midwest Living, National Geographic Traveler, Elite, Holland Sentinel's New Bride, and West Michigan Living. The inn also offers its own handmade aromatherapy soaps, available in the gift shop.

14. Mendon Country Inn & Creekside Lodge—operated by South African ex-patriots Chef Geff and Cheryl Clarke is this romantic 1843 inn nestled on the St. Jospeh Inn & Little Portage Creek on 14 acres with island and canoe dock. The interior, modeled after post-Civil War era grandiose style, features eight-foot windows, high ceilings, fan lights, and spacious rooms throughout the building compliment the winding walnut spiral staircase in the lobby. The Mendon Country Inn offers 16 Rooms with private baths. Each room is named and decorated accordingly. Some have one or two double beds and most have Jensen fireplaces. The "Rooftop Garden" offers a view of the creek and is a great place to read, relax and sunbathe.

15. Munro House Bed & Breakfast Day Spa—named “The Most Comfortable Lodging in Hillsdale County”- the inn, located in Jonesville, MI, is the oldest house in Jonesville and Hillsdale County’s first brick building. Once a station on the Underground Railroad, the Munro House offers guests the chance to relax in one of seven unique guest rooms, enjoy massage and spa treatments, play their baby grand piano, or spend time in the library with a book, a video, or "the boys" (their resident Scottish Terriers).

16. Palmer House Inn Bed & Breakfast— experience the romantic charm of a bygone era in this elegantly renovated 1887 brick Victorian mansion in downtown Albion’s National Historic District. Guest enjoy the inn’s surrounding beautiful parks, brick-paved roads, and antique shops. The inn itself offers five rooms filled with antique décor and a private or shared bath.

17. River’s Way Bed & Breakfast Inn— Experience that old-world charm in this 140-year-old Italianate home converted guesthouse, accompanied by modern conveniences. Take serene, riverside walks, or just sit on the patio and enjoy the view. Guests at Rivers Way B&B are served a full breakfast, complimentary beverages and evening snacks.

18. The Rocking Horse Inn—fourteen-room home sitting proudly atop a hill, surrounded by 2 ½ acres of spacious land. Built by one of the founding-fathers of the Republican Party, James Leonardson, one of the inn’s most recognizable features is its wrap-around porch, which guests love to spend peaceful moments upon, gazing out at the landscape.

19.Sanctuary At Wildwood—sitting on nearly 90 acres of woods and meadows in Jones, Michigan, the rooms echo the surrounding nature and landscape. From a private balcony or deck in any of the inn's five suites, guests can watch the ever-changing panorama of nature from dusk to dawn, throughout the four seasons of the year. Guests also have ample opportunity for antique shopping, engaging in challenging sports and activities, and exploring the surrounding area. The Great Blue Heron, the inspiration for the inn's logo, visits the pond morning and evening during the summer months, and deer and wild turkeys can be seen year round. Sanctuary Inn even creates its own soda-pop in several tasty flavors. There is a pool and even a fishing hole for those who cannot get enough of those fun water activities.

20. Stuart Avenue Inn—this romantic, restful, elegant retreat, located in Southern Michigan amid spectacular lakes and rivers, and Old World Amish communities. Victorian guesthouse and events center is located in the prestigious Stuart Area Historic District of Kalamazoo, Michigan. The inn offers its award-winning Shakespearean Garden as an oasis of beauty and comfort.

21. 24. Willow Glen Pond Bed & Breakfast Inn—romantic, restful, elegant retreat, located in Southern Michigan amid spectacular lakes and rivers, and Old World Amish communities.
