It’s Tulip Time in Holland Michigan. Over a million people will visit this small city on the shores of Lake Michigan to enjoy a festival that makes Holland one of the most beautiful places in the world. The event runs May 7-14 and includes trolley rides through town in neighborhoods that display hundreds of thousands of tulips in an incredible variety of sizes, styles, and colors. Locals are predicting the peek bloom day to be on Wednesday May 11. So if you have the time off, Wednesday should be the most beautiful tulip day.
Several parades are featured throughout the week, including the Governor’s Parade. To ready the streets for our state’s highest official, locals come downtown in full Dutch outfits–including wooden shoes–to scrub the street with mops and brooms. Adults and children participate in this quirky event that is a highlight for onlookers.
Lodging is at a premium in Holland and many places are sold out a year in advance. Neighboring cities offer bed and breakfast accommodations that are convenient for tourists in upscale and historic properties. J. Paules Fenn Inn in Fennville is about 30 minutes away and the Delano Mansion Inn in Allegan is about 10 minutes further. Tulip time has been recognized as one of the top 20 events in the world by the International Festival and Events Association. If you’ve never experienced Tulip Time, now is the time.
